作为细胞代谢网络的中心，线粒体的功能与衰老以及神经退行性疾病和癌症等疾病密切相关。当线粒体受到胁迫时，细胞会自主激活胁迫响应来维持线粒体内稳态，值得注意的是，在没有遭受胁迫的组织或细胞中，线粒体胁迫响应也可以通过一种非自主的方式被激活，这种非自主线粒体胁迫响应是由一类称为mitokine的分泌因子介导的。由于其在改善人类代谢健康方面的潜力，科学家们围绕mitokine展开了大量的研究。
